Fabarm L4S Allsport RS Semi-Auto Clays Smasher

In their O/U line, Fabarm USA has had the popular N2 Allsport and N2 Allsport XL for some time. The concept of the L4S Allsport RS is the same, as applied to a gas-operated semi-auto: one gun for all clays games, featuring a sturdy quick-release rib and a factory adjustable comb.

The rib set is superbly well done, and it is very, very easy to switch ribs. It is knock out one generously sized pin, slide the rib forward, and lift it off. Installation is the reverse. It does not wobble, rattle, and is not going to come loose-- the attachment is rock solid. The respective ribs are engraved 65/35 and 50/50 so there is no potential for confusion as to which rib is installed.

The first Fabarm USA semi-auto release going back some twelve years was the XLR5 Velocity https://chuckhawks.com/fabarm_XLR5.htm with an adjustable rib, now known as the XLR5 Velocity AR. It was, and is, a big, brawny, and beefy gun. Though the L4S Allsport is still a substantial 7-3/4 lbs. or so, it is a slimmer, faster handling shotgun. With its two ribs, one with a 50/50 point of impact and one set at 65/35 (about 4-1/2 inches high at 40 yards), the L4S is also quite a bit more affordable with a MSRP of $2750 while the XLR5 Velocity has gone up to $4100.

The L4S Allsport comes a 30 inch barrel with five extended chokes and is also available in a left hand version. The trigger breaks at 5-1/4 lbs., slightly heavy in my view, but feels lighter in actual shooting. The adjustable comb is walnut, painted black. This gives the gun a pleasant two-tone appearance with blue accents. I strongly prefer it to rubber or plastic combs that can fade or crack and serve no purpose except on ill-fitting guns which is precisely what an adjustable comb eliminates.

All gas-operated shotguns need at least some post-shoot cleaning to operate at their best. I have been cleaning "self-cleaning" gas actions for the last fifty years. You can reduce the carbon build-up by using better quality ammo and either use very small amounts of Breakfree ClP, or get away from petroleum lubes altogether with Hornady One-Shot.

The Fabarm L4S action does have an advantage, as there is no mainspring or mainspring tube in the butt stock to forget about until your gun stops working. I have seen enough mainspring tubes with so much stuff growing in there, it is a wonder some of those guns worked as long as they did. With the Fabarm L4S, all the goodies are easily seen, monitored and cleaned.

There are several advantages to going the “Allsport Route.” You have a mid-height rib, with a longer sighting plane as the back end of the rib extends onto the receiver (above) which a goodly number of shooters prefer. You have two distinctly different points of impact: the 65/35 is obviously for trap with a constantly rising target, although some skeet shooters like a slightly elevated point of impact as well for the sake of visibility of the targets and the last two stations. It also weighs a quarter pound or so more than the L4S Sporting, which most folks will welcome.

Aftermarket adjustable comb installations range from wondrous to tragic, so if you need or prefer an adjustable comb it is nice to have it factory installed, ready to run right out of the box. If you like to smash clays and enjoy more than one clays sport, and want the softer recoil pulse afforded by a gas-operated auto, this should be on your short list. The L4S Allsport has oversized controls (charging handle and bolt release) and a hand-filling palm swell.

Italy goes to sleep during the month of August. The guns from the first shipment are available now, while they last. I'll speculate that there will be more inventory of the Fabarm L4S Allsport RS available by the end of October. For more info, see https://fabarmusa.com/.
